So here goes. It's not even past the 4th day into the Olympics, and we already have an international crisis possibly looming. In case you haven't heard yet, a breakaway province in Georgia (the COUNTRY, NOT THE FLOP OF AN AMERICAN STATE GEORGIA >_<), South Ossetia, has been the scene of a rather embroiled conflict between separatists, and the government trying to regain control.
Outlook : Georgia is precariously placed on our World Map on Russia's southernmost border. North Ossetia, currently part of Russia, is located just west of the province of Chechnya, another separatist region which has been trying to shake the Russians off. Previous fighting in this region was last centered here, when the Kremlin last put an military offensive a few years ago when violence in the area was beyond control.
Situation: Russia is already being condemned by the U.S., and other European nations (for once!) on the bombing operations that have already been conducted by Russian military. Georgian troops were last reported withdrawing from the area, as the Georgian government has accused Russia of playing the aggressor in the whole scenario. (Georgia was a part of the old USSR in the Cold War era, possibly some bad blood there still?)
This looks like a good, recent topic to start off with, so I'm going with it. Discuss.
